The Ghana Health Service (GHS) on Wednesday donated three vehicles; one each to two Non-Governmental Organisations and a state institution to strengthen community engagement in the prevention of HIV and AIDS.
The beneficiary organisations are the Ghana HIV/AIDS network (GHANET), Hope for Future Generation (HFFG), a non-governmental organisation and the Ghana Prisons Service, all of which play vital roles in HIV awareness, and support services across the country.
With the provision of the vehicles, the three organisations are expected to move into the communities to raise awareness and educate people on the disease for reduced infections and stigma against persons living with HIV and AIDS.
Professor Samuel Akoriyea Kaba, the Director General of the Ghana Health Service, said the vehicles, acquired through support from Global Fund are intended to enhance the organisations’ ability to reach vulnerable populations and improve service delivery at the community level.
“The vehicles come with clear responsibilities and expectations, we are not dashing cars, we are giving them cars with responsibility, and they will have a checklist of the set targets detailing what the cars are being used for,” he stated.
Prof Kaba said antiretroviral medication would still be provided free of charge to all persons living with HIV, despite changes in international funding patterns.
The GHS director reiterated the government’s commitment to HIV prevention and treatment despite the rising trends of infectious diseases.
Dr Ernest Amoabeng Oteng, President of the GHANET, thanked the GHS on behalf of the three organizations.
He assured the service that the vehicles would be utilized effectively to achieve the desired results in HIV control efforts.
