Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan’s motorcade was involved in a road accident in the capital, Abuja.

Two police officers attached to him were killed in the Wednesday evening accident.

According to his spokesman, Ikechukwu Eze, the former president was not personally affected by the accident.

Mr Eze stated that the vehicle carrying the police officers was the only one that skidded off the road when the driver lost control.

It happened as Mr Jonathan, a special envoy of the regional bloc Ecowas, was walking from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport to his residence in the city.

Mr Jonathan has expressed deep sadness over the death of the two police officers, the spokesman said in a statement.

Two other policemen sustained injuries in the crash and were taken to a hospital for medical attention.
