Mr. James Gyakye Quayson, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Assin North, expressed his gratitude to former President John Dramani Mahama for supporting him during the June 27 parliamentary by-election, which resulted in his victory. Mr. Gyakye Quayson won the by-election with 57.56% of the valid votes cast.
In a statement released to the Ghana News Agency, Mr. Gyakye Quayson acknowledged the continuous support of former President Mahama, stating that without his assistance, he would not have become the MP for Assin North. He expressed his thanks to all national, regional, constituency, and branch executives, as well as the entire rank and file of the NDC, for their support throughout his journey.
After being sworn in as the MP for Assin North by Mr. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Gyakye Quayson extended his gratitude to the Speaker and the NDC parliamentary caucus for their warm welcome and unwavering support.
He also thanked the people of Assin North and the country for their prayers and support over the past few years, during which he faced numerous court processes due to his interest in serving his constituents and the country. Mr. Gyakye Quayson considered it a tremendous privilege and honor to have the unique opportunity to represent the good people of Assin North as their Member of Parliament.
Expressing his gratitude to God and the people of Assin North for their vote of confidence, he acknowledged the significant responsibility he now holds and pledged to work with all his strength to justify the trust placed in him by his constituents.
Mr. Gyakye Quayson acknowledged the various challenges facing Ghana, including unemployment, economic instability, corruption, environmental degradation, declining education standards, and over-politicized state institutions. He emphasized the need for Parliament to be more assertive in its oversight, lawmaking, and deliberative functions in order to address these challenges.
He promised to collaborate with his colleagues in the NDC Minority Caucus to confront these issues and promote growth, economic opportunity, shared prosperity, as well as equal rights, equal justice, equal citizenship, and equal opportunity for all.
Despite the daunting challenges, Mr. Gyakye Quayson expressed optimism about the prospects of a better future. He believed that by harnessing Ghana’s rich pool of human and natural resources and leveraging the skills and talents of all citizens, including those with dual citizenship, the country can achieve broad-based and sustainable growth. He looked forward to serving his constituents and the country as a whole in the eighth Parliament, starting from the day of his swearing-in.
