Mr. Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has commended the residents of Assin North for their overwhelming support for the party in the recent by-election held on June 27. Despite the distribution of gifts and incentives by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Kwetey expressed his delight that the people voted based on their conscience and honesty, rejecting the NPP.

During a rally held in Assin-Bereku to express gratitude to the people, Mr. Kwetey emphasized that the practice of buying and selling votes undermines good governance, encourages corruption, and hampers Ghana’s democratic progress. He called on all political parties to remember that the people cannot be swayed by false promises of development and vote-buying.

Mr. Kwetey urged the Electoral Commission, Supreme Court, and media to heed the resounding message delivered by the people of Assin North and remain focused on their respective mandates. He emphasized the importance of integrity and professionalism in carrying out their duties.

Mr. James Gyakye Quayson, the newly elected Member of Parliament for Assin North, expressed his gratitude to his constituents for their confidence in him. He acknowledged the responsibility that comes with their trust and pledged to work diligently for the people who made his victory possible.

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the MP for Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam and leader of the Minority Caucus in Parliament, assured Mr. Quayson of the group’s solidarity and support during his trial in court on charges of forgery and perjury. He vowed that the Minority would stand by Mr. Quayson whenever he is scheduled to appear in court.

In the by-election, Mr. Quayson secured victory with 17,245 votes, representing 57.56 percent of the valid votes cast. The NPP candidate, Mr. Charles Opoku, came in second with 12,630 votes, representing 42.15 percent. The candidate from the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Madam Sefenu Bernice Enyonam, received 87 votes, representing 0.29 percent.

Compared to the 2020 results, Mr. Quayson garnered over 1,300 more votes in the by-election. In the previous election, he won with 17,498 votes, defeating the former MP Abena Durowaa Mensah of the NPP, who received 14,193 votes.
