In response to predictions of heavy rains and the potential risk of floods, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Asuogyaman Constituency, is rallying support from Assembly members to tackle the issue head-on. The MP kickstarted a campaign at the Budukrom Electoral Area to desilt clogged gutters and ensure that the drainage system in the region is effectively maintained to prevent devastating floods.

Proactive Measures Against Heavy Rains

Recognizing the importance of flood preparedness, Mr. Ampem initiated the desilting campaign to facilitate unimpeded water flow in the area’s drains. He stressed the urgency of the strategy, as various Assembly Members had already reported blocked drains. The comprehensive approach includes community sensitization and collective efforts to ensure the safety of residents from the potential ravages of floods.

Communal Efforts to Combat Floods

Emphasizing the significance of community involvement, Mr. David Tamakloe, the Assemblyman for the Budukrom Electoral Area, commended the MP’s leadership in hiring excavators to work on major drains. He urged all residents to actively participate in keeping their communities’ drains clean. Moreover, he highlighted the global impact of climate change and the importance of adopting environmentally friendly practices to minimize exposure to unpredictable weather patterns.

Embracing Climate-Resilient Practices

The clean-up exercise involved substantial efforts, such as excavating clogged drains and widening their base to accommodate large volumes of water effectively. The MP confirmed that similar initiatives would be undertaken in various locations to strengthen communities’ resilience against floods and their adverse effects on the socio-economic development of the Asuogyaman Constituency.

The Gyasehene of Atimpoku, Nana Obeng Akrofi, and Nana Adu Apomah, Amankrado of Atimpoku, also showed their support for the campaign. They highlighted the potential benefits of the initiative for the neighborhood while cautioning against the improper disposal of household waste into open drains, which obstructs water flow.
