The Ghana Dock Labour Company (GDLC) has recently conducted a comprehensive training program to enhance efficiency and safety at the Tema and Takoradi ports. The training equipped 97 staff members, including 86 males and 11 females, with professional certification in mobile crane operations.

As a casual labor organization responsible for managing dock workers, GDLC understands the importance of skilled workers in ensuring smooth operations at the ports. The two-week intensive training focused on providing the participants with the necessary skills and expertise to handle mobile cranes effectively.

Mr. Elisha Debrah Odoom, the Managing Director of GDLC, emphasized that in addition to boosting port efficiency, the training aimed to reduce accidents within the ports. The ultimate goal is to certify all workers in their respective areas of operation, with plans to extend ISO certification to toll drivers and unloading and offloading dockers for their roles in the maritime industry.

Mr. Edward Heyman, the Fire and Safety Manager at the Port of Tema, stressed the importance of adhering to safety measures, highlighting their direct impact on the ports’ turnover rate. Following proper procedures is crucial to maintaining an accident-free working environment.

Mr. George Koney, the Stevedore Manager at the Tema Port, encouraged the trainees to build their confidence, a vital skill for crane operators to excel in their field. He emphasized the importance of continuous learning as the role of crane operators evolves with new dynamics in machine operations.

Gifty Jordan, the Terminal 1 Manager, urged the trainees to exhibit professionalism and apply their newly acquired skills effectively. The staff members who participated in the training expressed their appreciation to GDLC for providing this valuable opportunity and encouraged other port workers to seize such chances for their professional growth.

GDLC’s commitment to enhancing the skills of its workforce underscores its dedication to improving port operations and ensuring a safer and more efficient maritime industry in Ghana.
