Michael Ebenezer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr., popularly known as Stormzy, has announced his commitment to fund the university education of 30 black students at the prestigious University of Cambridge. The scholarship program, which is a collaboration between HSBC UK and Stormzy’s charity, the Merky Foundation, will provide each recipient with a maintenance grant, significantly reducing their reliance on government or commercial loans.

Stormzy shared the news on his social media page, stating that each scholarship will cover tuition fees and maintenance costs for a 3 or 4-year degree course. As part of the collaboration, each of the 30 selected students will receive an annual scholarship of £20,000.

Expressing his excitement about the initiative, Stormzy remarked that supporting an additional 30 black students to study at Cambridge University, on the fifth anniversary of the scholarship’s launch, is a momentous milestone.

Since its inception in 2018, the Stormzy Scholarship has supported 32 black students in the UK, providing them with financial assistance to transform their university experience.

Stormzy’s journey to stardom began in 2014 when he gained attention in the UK underground music scene through his “Wicked Skengman” series of freestyles over classic grime beats. His talent and dedication to his craft earned him recognition and acclaim, propelling him to become a prominent figure in the British music industry.

Born on July 26, 1993, Stormzy was raised by his Ghanaian single mother, Abigail Owuo.
