The Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Ms. Lariba Zuweria Abudu, has announced that the Ghanaian government is actively amending the Persons with Disability Act 2006 (Act 715) to align with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability. This move aims to ensure equal enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including education, health, employment, and transportation, for all disabled individuals. The proposed amendments include tax exemptions for employers and training programs for unemployed persons with disabilities, with the ultimate goal of increasing their employment rate.

In response to a parliamentary question, Ms. Abudu highlighted the government’s efforts to promote equitable employment opportunities for PWDs in the labor market, particularly within the public service. These actions align with Sustainable Development Goals Eight and 10, which seek to achieve inclusive economic growth, full and productive employment, and reduced inequalities based on various factors, including disability.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a comprehensive set of 17 interconnected objectives established by the United Nations in 2015. They serve as a global blueprint for fostering peace and prosperity for both people and the planet, both now and in the future. Ghana’s commitment to amending the Act and implementing supportive policies underscores the nation’s dedication to empowering persons with disabilities and creating a more inclusive and prosperous society.
