In the realm of modern politics, the influence of social media cannot be overstated. Yet, as Madam Tangoba Abayage, a former Upper East Regional Minister in Ghana, underscores, achieving significant political change requires more than just digital engagement. Speaking to members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Abayage called for a shift from virtual activism to tangible actions in order to advance the party’s mission of ending the eight-year rule of political parties in Ghana.

Her message resonates particularly with the youth, urging them to move beyond the comfort of their screens and into the heart of communities. In a bid to “break the eight” and secure victory in the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections, Abayage emphasized the importance of on-ground engagement. She believes that while social media serves as a potent tool, its impact is magnified when coupled with physical presence and grassroots mobilization.

The call to action was given prominence during the inauguration of the ‘Rapid Response Unit’ for Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, an event that aimed to galvanize support for him in the upcoming Party’s Presidential primaries. Abayage stressed that the NPP’s accomplishments and positive projects should be highlighted in the face of negativity, encouraging members to engage proactively with constituents to reinforce these achievements.

Abayage’s vision centers around reaching every nook and cranny of the country, echoing the sentiment that breaking the eight-year rule requires a multifaceted approach. While Dr. Bawumia is recognized as a prominent figure among the aspirants, Abayage emphasized the need for dedicated efforts to ensure his success. She urged delegates to secure his position among the top contenders and to propel him to victory as the Flagbearer and future President.

The ‘Rapid Response Unit,’ led by Filson Awankua, aligns with this grassroots strategy, citing Dr. Bawumia’s dedication and experience as qualities that make him a credible candidate for transformative leadership. The unit’s emphasis on the Vice President’s unifying nature, irrespective of religious backgrounds, speaks to the broader aspiration for cohesion and development.

Madam Tangoba Abayage’s clarion call serves as a reminder that political change demands more than digital enthusiasm; it necessitates a physical presence that engages, educates, and empowers communities. As the NPP seeks to reshape the political landscape of Ghana, the combined force of online activism and grassroots action stands as a potent tool for transformation.
