According to Umar Farouk Aliu Mahama, MP for the Yendi seat, many MPs of the New Patriotic Party are pushing for vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to be chosen as the party’s next flagbearer.

Dr. Bawumia, according to Mr. Mahama, stands out among the candidates who have so far put themselves forward for the position of NPP flagbearer.

Although the other candidates are equally qualified, the Chairman of the Parliament’s Muslim Caucus said on Eyewitness News on Citi FM that the Vice President is the best choice to lead the nation to its promised land given his experience working with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“As for me and the majority of the Majority MPs, we support the Vice President, and that is a truth. We are bold enough to declare that we want Mahamudu Bawumia to lead us to the promised land and to bring the party together after the elections.

Although we haven’t yet met the other candidates for president, it was evident during our meeting with the vice president that Dr. Bawumia is a popular choice. We won’t say that everyone in the room supports him, but at least over 100 MPs do.

Furthermore, Mr. Mahama expressed confidence that “Bawumia will win [the presidential primaries] with over 80% of the votes.”

The Vice President in a meeting with members of the Majority Caucus in Parliament on Tuesday, May 2 disclosed his intention to contest the NPP Presidential Primaries on November 4, 2023.

He comes up against nine others including three-time runner Alan Kyerematen who resigned in January 2023 to focus on his Presidential ambition.
