Mr. Albert Boakye Okyere, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, has initiated an engagement with members of the Ashaiman SSNIT Pensioners and the Veterans Administration of Ghana (VAG) in Ashaiman. The purpose of this interaction is to meet with senior citizens and incorporate their experiences and knowledge into the development plans of the Ashaiman Municipality.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr. Okyere explained that the engagement was part of his vision to understand the needs and aspirations of all individuals in Ashaiman. He recognized that the veterans and pensioners possess valuable expertise and insights that can contribute to the rapid development of various communities in Ashaiman.
Mr. Okyere assured the participants that the Municipal Assembly would establish advisory committees within the electoral areas. He further stated that members of the veterans and SSNIT Pensioners would be included in these committees to ensure effective performance and satisfactory service delivery.
Acknowledging the wisdom and rich experiences of the senior citizens, Mr. Okyere emphasized the importance of their guidance for the leadership. He reiterated the commitment of the Municipal Assembly to support the elderly, including the pensioners, in overcoming their challenges.
Mr. Emmanuel Harrison Ahiabu, Chairman of the SSNIT Pensioners Association in the Ashaiman District, expressed gratitude to the MCE and the staff of the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly for engaging them. However, he raised concerns about the welfare crises faced by pensioners and called on the government to urgently intervene on their behalf.
Mr. Ahiabu suggested that the government, through the various Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), could consider providing waivers or exemptions for pensioners, including property rates and other levies. He also emphasized the importance of involving pensioners in policy initiatives, allowing their voices and opinions to contribute to the development of their communities.
