Captain Smart, the host of Onua FM’s morning show, was arrested earlier in the day and released by police on Thursday evening.

Captain Smart was arrested, according to the police, for making remarks that were deemed threatening to peace and security.

According to section 2017 of the Criminal Act of 1960, he was admonished for provocative behavior conducive to breaches of the peace (Act 29).

Captain Smart’s bosses, the Media General Group, backed him, claiming that the cops misunderstood his words.

“We are increasingly concerned about the new trend of the arrest of Journalists and media practitioners,” it also said in a statement announcing Captain Smart’s release.

“We are convinced that a careful review of the entire statement made by Captain Smart would reveal that it did not amount to threats to the peace and or stability of the country as claimed by the Ghana Police.”

Captain Smart has courted controversy over the years for being hard on political leaders while speaking about ills in society.

He worked with the Multimedia Group and the Angel Broadcasting Network before working for Media General.

In July 2018, he was arrested for carrying a gun at the New Patriotic Party’s national delegates’ conference grounds in Koforidua.
