Augustina Worlasi Seadzi, a Dental Surgery Technician at the International Maritime Hospital (IMaH) in Tema, has cautioned against the use of hard-bristled toothbrushes due to the potential harm they can cause to teeth and gums. Ms. Seadzi emphasized the importance of proper dental care during a health promotion initiative organized by the Ghana News Agency Tema Regional Office. She highlighted the risks associated with overbrushing and the use of hard-bristled toothbrushes and recommended adopting softer bristles for optimal oral health.

Harmful Effects of Hard-Bristled Toothbrushes

Ms. Seadzi explained that many people mistakenly believe that brushing vigorously with hard-bristled toothbrushes ensures a cleaner mouth. However, she warned that such practices can lead to tooth and gum problems. Hard-bristled toothbrushes can cause gum damage and wear down the enamel, the protective layer of teeth. Excessive pressure while brushing can push the gum back and erode the enamel, resulting in increased sensitivity to hot and cold food and drinks.

Preventive Measures for Oral Health

To promote good oral hygiene, Ms. Seadzi advised rinsing the mouth with water after meals to remove food particles, particularly around the wisdom teeth area. This simple step helps clean the gum area and prevents the accumulation of debris. She emphasized that using a toothbrush to clean the gum should be avoided, as it can cause damage. Instead, individuals are encouraged to use toothbrushes with soft to medium bristles, which are gentler on teeth and gums.

The Importance of Dental Care

Ms. Seadzi’s recommendations stem from her experience as a dental professional and the challenges faced by dentists due to overbrushing and the use of hard-bristled toothbrushes. She highlighted the significance of proper dental care and urged Ghanaians to make informed decisions about their oral health. By adopting softer bristle toothbrushes and practicing regular oral hygiene habits, individuals can maintain healthier teeth and gums, reducing the risk of tooth and gum problems.

Conclusion: Augustina Worlasi Seadzi, a Dental Surgery Technician at IMaH, has raised awareness about the potential harm caused by using hard-bristled toothbrushes and overbrushing. Stressing the importance of oral health, Ms. Seadzi recommended using toothbrushes with softer bristles to avoid gum damage and enamel erosion. Her expert advice encourages Ghanaians to prioritize proper dental care by adopting healthier brushing habits and maintaining good oral hygiene practices. By following these recommendations, individuals can safeguard their teeth and gums for better long-term oral health.
