Dental Expert Advises Against Using Hard-Bristled Toothbrushes for Better Oral Health

Augustina Worlasi Seadzi, a Dental Surgery Technician at the International Maritime Hospital (IMaH) in Tema, has cautioned against the use of hard-bristled toothbrushes due to the potential harm they can cause to teeth and gums. Ms. Seadzi emphasized the importance of proper dental care during a health promotion initiative organized by the Ghana News Agency Tema Regional Office. She highlighted the risks associated with overbrushing and the use of hard-bristled toothbrushes and recommended adopting softer bristles for optimal oral health.

Harmful Effects of Hard-Bristled Toothbrushes

Ms. Seadzi explained that many people mistakenly believe that brushing vigorously with hard-bristled toothbrushes ensures a cleaner mouth. However, she warned that such practices can lead to tooth and gum problems. Hard-bristled toothbrushes can cause gum damage and wear down the enamel, the protective layer of teeth. Excessive pressure while brushing can push the gum back and erode the enamel, resulting in increased sensitivity to hot and cold food and drinks.

Preventive Measures for Oral Health

To promote good oral hygiene, Ms. Seadzi advised rinsing the mouth with water after meals to remove food particles, particularly around the wisdom teeth area. This simple step helps clean the gum area and prevents the accumulation of debris. She emphasized that using a toothbrush to clean the gum should be avoided, as it can cause damage. Instead, individuals are encouraged to use toothbrushes with soft to medium bristles, which are gentler on teeth and gums.
