According to Andrews Egyapa Mercer, Deputy Minister of Energy, Ghana is not currently threatened by erratic power cuts dubbed “dumsor.”
According to him, the available power data indicates that the country is not returning to the days of power rationing.
“We are not at all threatened by dumsor,” he said on Good Evening Ghana.
“If you look at the data, we are not threatened by dumsor,” he added.
“We’re not concerned at all. You cannot predict the extent to which we operate equipment. There are both planned and unplanned outages.
“Pre-planned outages” I expect the ECG and GRIDCO…to announce and people to plan for, said the Sekondi lawmaker.
Former Minister of Power Dr Kwabena Donkor had earlier asked the government to bring on stream additional power supply units to boost the country’s total capacity in order to meet the increasing demand for power.
The Pru East lawmaker said “This country is most likely to face load-shedding in the next two years if urgent steps are not taken from this moment to increase our power generation.
“Power consumption demand increases between 7% and 15% every year, and it takes a minimum of three years to bring on stream a new thermal plant. We seem to be sleepwalking into a situation of possible power outages as a result of supply limitation,” he said.
