The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Tema South District, has engaged community opinion leaders under its jurisdiction on the best ways to ensure the safety of the company’s facilities in the area.
Mr Horace Nkansah, an Engineer and Tema South District Manager of the ECG, during the engagement appealed to community leaders to support the company to protect its assets.
Mr Nkansah noted that some of the power distribution company’s sub-stations had been turned into refuse dumps, which negatively impacted on their work and power supply.
He also indicated that there was an alarming incidence of fuse theft in the area, affecting power supply and keeping affected customers without electricity for a while.
He expressed worry at the trend of some recalcitrant people breaking the padlocks to the sub-stations and using the inner perimeter as their storage facility, stating that such situations were very alarming and could cause fatalities.
The District Manager pleaded with the community leaders to help inform their residents to take their security seriously and refrain from such acts that could jeopardise their lives and the properties of the company.
Responding to concerns on unstable power supply and low voltage situations raised by the community leaders, he informed them that some outages were from the company, while others were also through faults and problems caused by unscrupulous people.
“If, for instance, there is a fuse theft and a transformer goes off, such an outage will not be from the company,” he said, adding that “in situations where work has to be done at a substation, but upon reaching there, there are piles of refuse all over, it becomes difficult to attend to the problem immediately as the rubbish has to be cleared first.”
The company encouraged the community leaders to make use of a WhatsApp platform created for them and officials of the ECG Tema South District to reach out to them with challenges, as it provides an essential way for information flow between the stakeholders.
