The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Training School in Tema recently conducted a training session on earthing for 100 members of the Ghana Electrical Contractors Association (GEAC). The training aimed to enhance the competency and safety of electrical engineers and contractors in delivering their services.

Mr. Aheng Owusu-Afriyie, the Director of the ECG Training School, emphasized the importance of earthing training in conjunction with safety. The training packages were developed based on the sector’s needs to equip contractors with the necessary skills to meet ECG’s standards and ensure that earthworks are carried out to the required standard. Contractors play a critical role in ECG’s operations, and regular training ensures that they deliver high-quality work.

Dr. George Eduful, the General Manager of ECG’s Energy Consulting and Telco Business, explained the significance of earthing in electrical installations. Proper earthing prevents safety issues such as electrocution and serious injuries. It is essential for all buildings, structures, electrical equipment, and household gadgets to have effective earthing systems to prevent accidents in case of faults.

Dr. Eduful highlighted the potential dangers of inadequate earthing, including the risk of electrocution and step voltage. The training aimed to equip contractors with the skills to design effective earthing systems to protect ECG’s infrastructure and the public. Continuous training ensures that contractors stay up-to-date with evolving standards and can provide resilient, reliable, safe, and high-performance electrical systems.

Mr. Awal Sakib Mohammed, President of the Ghana Electrical Contractors Association, emphasized the importance of collaboration between contractors and ECG in ensuring the reliability and safety of electrical installations. Training on best practices enables contractors to conduct robust work on the distribution system, contributing to improved service delivery for ECG customers.
