The Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate has commenced the 7th national COVID-19 vaccination round to immunize all eligible individuals and work towards achieving herd immunity against the virus. The five-day vaccination exercise aims to cover over three million targeted people in the region and avert future mass spread of the virus.

Dr. Farida Njelba Abdulai, Acting Deputy Director of Public Health in the Greater Accra Region, stated that the Directorate had dedicated significant resources to ensure maximum coverage during the campaign. They aim to vaccinate over 170,000 people by the end of the exercise, and logistics have been put in place to reach this target effectively.

The campaign’s approach includes going to communities, households, churches, mosques, markets, and traditional authorities to provide information on the importance of vaccination and administer vaccines. The region has already achieved a vaccination rate of 50 percent for fully vaccinated individuals, 60 percent for those who have received two doses, and over 20 percent for booster doses.

Dr. Mrs. Priscilla Anima Poku, the Municipal Director of Health in La Nkwantanang Madina, highlighted the success of continuous engagement efforts, overcoming initial vaccine apathy in the Municipality. The public is urged to continue practicing safety measures like handwashing, using hand sanitizers, and wearing masks.

The eligible individuals for vaccination include those aged 18 and above who have not been vaccinated, those awaiting the second dose after receiving their first, and pregnant women who have not received any COVID-19 vaccination. Booster doses are also available for individuals who have completed a minimum of three months after their primary COVID-19 vaccination series.

With the ongoing vaccination efforts, the Greater Accra Region aims to achieve solid immunity against COVID-19 and make progress towards full herd immunity to protect its population effectively.
