Madam Gifty Offeibea Koranteng, the Acting Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) Tema Office, says her outfit will continue in its awareness creation to attract tourists to the Greenwich Meridian Line that passes through the area.

Madam Koranteng indicated that even though the Greenwich Meridian line passes through Tema, making the area the closest to the centre of the world, most people, including residents, had no knowledge of it.

“From 2023 till now, what we’ve been doing is to promote the meridian line.

There are a lot of people in Ghana here who do not know that Tema is the closest habitable area to the meridian line.

The meridian line is in the sea though, but the closest habitable point or closest habitable area is in Tema,” she said.

She said the line passes through the Presbyterian Church of Ghana at Tema Community One and through some places of the harbour area, their intensification on its awareness creation to urge tourists to visit Tema when they visit Ghana.

She said the office would collaborate with stakeholders to make the awareness visible to people, noting that Tema was one of the entry points to Ghana; therefore, those coming through must experience the tourist site in the area before moving to other places.

Madam Koranteng noted that, for instance, they were working with Sun Seekers Tours to ensure that tourists on board cruise ships docking at the Tema Port would have as part of their schedule visits to the Greenwich Meridian line.

She said having more people visit the area would not only benefit the state by adding to the country’s financial resources but would also benefit the locals, as tourists would also buy from them and make use of hospitality infrastructure.
