Parliament Marks 30 Years of Democracy with Public Forums in Ghana

In a momentous celebration of Ghana’s 30 years of continuous Parliamentary Democracy under the Fourth Republican Constitution, Parliament is set to host public forums in the southern zone, including Takoradi, Cape Coast, and Koforidua. Running from August 8 to 12, these forums provide a unique opportunity for parliamentarians to directly engage with citizens, answering questions and addressing concerns that contribute to deepening the roots of democracy within the country.

Mr. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the distinguished Speaker of Parliament, shared this exciting initiative during the closing session of the Second Meeting of the Third Session under the Eighth Parliament of the Fourth Republic. Reflecting on the Open Parliament Initiative, Speaker Bagbin emphasized his efforts in collaborating with media houses to ensure the views of the House are shared widely.

During his engagements with the media, Speaker Bagbin reiterated Parliament’s commitment to safeguarding free expression and media freedom. As Ghana celebrates this significant milestone, he reaffirmed the intention to make the most of the 30th Anniversary commemoration, ensuring that the regions of Western, Central, and Eastern Ghana are all part of the celebration.

In an effort to make the celebrations inclusive and engaging, the public forums will see the active participation of Members of Parliament from the Western, Central, and Eastern regions. Speaker Bagbin himself will lead the delegation to Takoradi on August 8, while Deputy Speakers Mr. Joseph Osei-Owusu and Mr. Andrew Amoako Asiamah will address similar programs in Koforidua and Cape Coast, respectively.

The festivities extend beyond forums, with a Mock Parliament and Debate scheduled for Cape Coast on August 9. Additionally, a Peace Walk and Fun Games are set to unfold in Koforidua on August 12, creating an opportunity for communities to come together in the spirit of unity and celebration.

As Ghana marks this significant chapter in its democratic journey, the commitment of Parliament to engaging with the public and fostering open dialogue stands as a testament to the nation’s dedication to advancing democracy and ensuring the voices of the people are heard and valued.
