President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has initiated a groundbreaking affordable housing project at Pokuase, near Amasaman in the Greater Accra Region. This project marks a significant step in the government’s revamped National Affordable Housing Programme, which aims to bridge the affordability gap and improve housing access for Ghanaians.
The Pokuase Affordable Housing Project, a public-private partnership spanning 203 acres, will construct 8,000 affordable housing units. The project will offer a variety of studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom apartments, with prices starting at $13,800. The first phase, comprising 4,000 units, will be completed within 18 months, while the remaining 4,000 units will be finished in the second phase within the same timeframe.
Under the revised National Affordable Housing Programme, the government will subsidize housing units with land and infrastructure, while the private sector will secure funding for cost-recovery construction. In addition to the Pokuase project, a 6,000-unit development in Dedesua, Ashanti, is also part of the initiative, with five selected developers handling the housing units.
President Akufo-Addo emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the housing needs of Ghanaian workers and creating pathways for all citizens to access homes. With urbanization posing significant challenges to housing and a housing deficit of 1.8 million units, the President stressed the importance of the National Affordable Housing Programme in providing supportive subsidies and policies to make housing accessible to all Ghanaians. The project reflects a fruitful partnership between the government and the private sector, and the government intends to make well-structured mortgage agreements available to various groups to further facilitate access to residences.
