The military government of Burkina Faso said in a statement that ousted President Roch Kaboré has been allowed to return to his home in the capital, Ouagadougou.

Mr KaborĂ© has been under house arrest in the capital’s ministerial villa since January, when he was deposed in a coup led by Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Damiba, who is now the head of state.

His family confirmed to the BBC that he had been released, but provided no further information.

His release was announced after weeks of deliberation.

It also comes in response to international calls for his release.

The government added that measures were being taken to ensure his safety.
