Three pregnant girls, and two nursing mothers wrote the just-ended Basic Education Certificate Examination in the Sunyani Municipality, Mrs Yaa Kumi Yeboah, the Public Relations Officer of the Sunyani Municipal Directorate of Education has disclosed.
She told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview in Sunyani that five pregnant girls also wrote the examination in 2023.
Mrs Yeboah said the 2024 BECE also recorded 10 absenteeism in the Municipality, comprising three boys and seven girls.
However, she could not give reasons for their absence.
In another interview, Mrs Rosemond Amonoo, the Sunyani Municipal Girl-Child Coordinator, said girl-child education had seen some improvements this year and attributed it to the directorate’s initiatives of constantly engaging parents.
She said through the continuous engagements, “many parents have appreciated the need for them to support and encourage their girls to go to school.”
Mrs Amanoo said out of the 4,166 candidates who registered for the BECE, 2,193 of them were girls.
