The United States has congratulated President-elect John Dramani Mahama on his successful election campaign following the declaration of results by Ghana’s Electoral Commission.

In a statement issued by U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, the U.S. also commended Vice President-elect Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who made history as Ghana’s first female vice president-elect.

The U.S. praised the EC, civil society, and Ghana’s security services for ensuring a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process.

The statement also acknowledged Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s gracious acceptance of the election results.

While recognizing the largely peaceful elections, the U.S. expressed concern about isolated incidents of violence, which resulted in some deaths.

The U.S. extended its condolences to the affected families and called for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability.

Mr. Blinken emphasised the U.S.’s commitment to further strengthening its partnership with Ghana.

The statement expressed optimism about collaborating with President-elect Mahama and his administration to advance mutual interests and deepen bilateral relations.
