The Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) is preparing to observe the 2023 African Union Anti-Corruption Day on July 11. The coalition aims to empower and educate the youth in Ghana about corruption and their role in fighting against it. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Adoption of the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption: Achievements and Challenges.”
Mrs. Beauty Emefa Narteh, Executive Secretary of GACC, highlighted the importance of engaging young people in advocating for social change, as they are among the most affected by corruption and form a significant portion of the population. She emphasized that young people are more receptive to social and political transformations and, at the same time, are vulnerable to bribery and other forms of corruption.
To commemorate the AU Anti-Corruption Day, GACC has developed a project titled “Empowering Ghanaian Youth: GACC Commitment on AU Anti-Corruption Day.” The project aims to create informed and active citizens who will contribute to a corruption-free future for Ghana. Additionally, GACC is implementing the “Building Evidence for Increased Accountability in Ghana through a Multi-Stakeholder Accountability Initiative” project in collaboration with its Local Accountability Networks and with funding support from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. This project will be carried out in 31 districts across 14 regions of Ghana.
The initiatives undertaken by GACC reflect the recognition of the importance of involving young people in the fight against corruption and the need for multi-stakeholder collaboration to enhance accountability in Ghana.
