The United States Embassy in Accra held a ceremony to commemorate the 247th Independence Day celebration of the United States. This was the first in-person event since the COVID-19 pandemic, and it brought together dignitaries from Ghana, including government officials, public figures, traditional and religious leaders, and members of the diplomatic corps.

Mrs. Virginia E. Palmer, the US Ambassador to Ghana, reiterated the US’s commitment to its ties with Ghana. She highlighted the completion of a $390 million Millennium Challenge compact, which involved the construction of power infrastructure that would contribute significantly to Ghana’s economic growth.

The Ambassador emphasized the strong security partnership between the two countries, mentioning the joint military exercise called Flintlock, which involved 29 nation militaries. She also announced that the US would soon commission two ships and hand over pier equipment worth millions of dollars to the special boat squadron in Ghana.

Mrs. Palmer stated that the celebration was not just about America’s independence but also about the strong bonds between the United States and Ghana. She acknowledged the economic challenges facing Ghana and commended the Minister of Finance for securing an International Monetary Fund deal. She assured Ghana that the US government, companies, and people were with them in their efforts to recover the economy.

The Ambassador highlighted Ghana’s significant role in inspiring others in their quest for freedom, including the United States. She recognized Ghana’s heroes, activists, innovators, and dreamers who have made a positive impact on history.

Representing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Mrs. Ursula Owusu Ekuful, the Minister of Communications, spoke about the growing friendship between Ghana and the US. She emphasized the collaboration and cooperation between the two countries, particularly in areas such as democracy, good governance, election support, capacity building, and civil society engagement.

The event celebrated the longstanding relationship between the United States and Ghana and highlighted the shared values of democracy, freedom, and cooperation.
