As part of the sub-regional integration process to bring governance closer to the people, Winneba, Ghana, is set to host the Extraordinary Session of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament in September 2023. This marks the second time Ghana has been chosen to host the ECOWAS Parliament, which convenes twice a year. The decision reflects the region’s commitment to enhancing regional and continental cooperation on matters of importance.

The 2023 First Ordinary Session of Parliament, held in Abuja from May 8 to May 26, 2023, was convened under Article 21.1 of the Supplementary Act, empowering the ECOWAS Parliament to meet twice a year for discussions on regional and continental issues. The upcoming Extraordinary Session in Winneba will enable national delegates to present their country’s reports, updating the body on unfolding developments and the status of implementation of community texts.

Mr. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the leader of the Ghanaian delegation and a Member of the ECOWAS Parliament, expressed his optimism about hosting the conference in Winneba. He emphasized the significance of bringing governance closer to the people and creating opportunities for growth, development, and tourism in the region. Winneba’s status as the capital of one of the municipalities in the Central Region and its coastal location offers an excellent opportunity to showcase the city for greater opportunities.

Having successfully hosted a delocalized meeting and an Extraordinary Session in 2021, Winneba has set a precedent for the upcoming event. Mr. Afenyo-Markin assured that the Ghanaian government would put in place necessary protocols and security arrangements to ensure a successful and pleasurable session for all participants. He encouraged all members of the ECOWAS Parliament to attend the program and take advantage of the opportunities for collaboration and regional development.

The upcoming Extraordinary Session in Winneba is expected to further foster regional integration, bringing together delegates from various countries to deliberate on key issues, build consensus, and promote cooperation for the development and progress of the ECOWAS community.
